Description

At time of the initial writing, the mail server implementation (mail_server role) was based around the workaround.org ISP mail guide for Debian Jessie. Since then the role has not seen any major updates in relation to how the SMTP (Postfix) and IMAP (Dovecot) servers are implemented, and the original ISP mail guide has seen two updates - for Debian Stretch and Debian Buster.

It would be useful to bring the mail server implementation up-to-date in terms of configuration.

The following should be done:

  • Update the mail_server role.
    • Base the new guide around the use of latest workaround.org ISP mail guide for Debian Buster. Buster guide should be used mainly for future-proofing, but it should be compared against the Debian Stretch guide as well.
    • Drop the use/installation of procmail package - since it does not seem to be used in any way under Debian Stretch any longer.
    • Try to determine differences in Postfix/Dovecot configuration by comparing stock files from different Debian versions (Jessie/Stretch/Buster).
  • Update the mail_forwarder role (if relevant) in similar manner as the mail_server role.
  • Update usage instructions (if relevant).
  • Update role reference documentation.
  • Update release notes.
