Description

The common role allows administrator to customise the shell (Bash) prompt colour to more easily distinguish between different environments (such as test, staging, production).

Functionality is very useful, but some of the more modern Debian releases come with a more colourful default shell prompt that makes it easier to distinguish the username, hostname, and working directory in the prompt. It would be nice if the common role allowed for more flexibility in configuring the prompt, allow for more colour customisations for different parts of the prompt.

The following should be done:

  • Update the common role.
    • Introduce separate parameters for controlling the colour of different segments of the prompt (username, hostname, working directory, role's prompt_id).
    • Update the prompt layout based on latest Debian release supported.
  • Update role reference documentation.
  • Update usage instructions.
  • Update release notes.
