Description

At the moment local user passwords, mails, and cronjobs are not part of the regular backups.

In case of the passwords (/etc/shadow file), it is useful to back it up for disaster recovery (since user passwords are set once during the initial installation, and afterwards are managed by hand).

The local user mails can provide valuable information about failures if, for any reason, the regular mail server is not functioning. The crontabs might have been modified by regular users on as-needed basis (i.e. outside of configuration management system).

All three should be included in the backup. The following should be done:

  • Update the common role to include back-up of the following paths:
    • /etc/shadow
    • /var/mail/
    • /var/spool/cron/
