Description

Very often the users have either multiple XMPP clients running at the same time, or they frequently switch back-and-forth between them. For example, a user might be logged-in via desktop application, only to log-out from there and continue the chat via phone application. By default this means that only partial conversation is available under both clients, making it a bit harder to archive/store the chat history, as well as to get a full grip on past conversations.

In order to be able to have the same messages appear in multiple XMPP clients connecting to Prosody (deployed via the xmpp_server role), it would be useful to enable additional modules that implement the relevant standards - (XEP-0280: Message Carbons and XEP-0313: Message Archive Management. These two combined should handle both the situation where multiple clients are connected at the same time, and when one of them is currently offline.

The following should be done:

  • Update the xmpp_server role.
    • Enable mod_carbons and mod_mam modules via Prosody configuration.
    • Introduce parameter xmpp_server_archive_expiration for controlling mod_mam configuration option archive_expires_after.
  • Update tests.
  • Update usage instructions (if relevant).
  • Update role reference documentation.
  • Update release notes.
